So before I try it out and lose the battle to resin yet again, I want to ask if anyone has ever used a paintbrush to apply resin to a portion of a painting. In my scenario I have a painting with the outline of a hand on the board and I want to have the hand only have a glass-like finish while leaving the background matte. My worry is that as the resin dries, it slowly spreads out, potentially crawling past the outline of the hand. Any tips anyone has is appreciated. I need the layer to be thick and smooth, with a high gloss finish.

There’s no way to keep the resin ‘corralled’ without having something in place. You could either try tape or wax as a barrier as resin won’t stick to either. If you don’t mind seeing an outline of the hand, this article shows you how to use a paint to keep the resin in/out: https://www.resinobsession.com/resin-tutorials/mothers-day-crafts
