      This question comes from Sara:

I am planning to embed an oven baked clay sculpture in a clear acrylic box. the dimensions of the box are; 19 inches by 15 inches by 1 inch high. What resin would you recommend using (for home use so preferably no toxic fumes involved, air bubbles would not be a concern for me) and what quantity should I purchase? Can I pour an inch thick resin at one time?

      Hi Sara,

All of the resins we sell conform to ASTM D-4236. This means the resin is safe for art purposes and can be used anywhere, not just in the home. Since it sounds like you are new to resin, I would suggest any of our clear epoxy resins. (Some are better at avoiding bubbles than others.) You can find them here: https://shop.resinobsession.com/collections/resin/clear Each one has its pros and cons so I understand it may be difficult to narrow it down further. There is a PDF link in this article that details the resins further, minimum and maximum mixing amounts, best uses, etc. https://www.resinobsession.com/resin-frequently-asked-questions/resin-casting The polyester resin shown on that page would work for this project as well, except it smells horrible. That sounds like something you are trying to avoid.

You can pour a one inch thickness at a time assuming the manufacturer says you can mix that much resin at once. Mixing more resin at once than the manufacturer recommends will mean your resin will heat up and cure quickly. (Even sometimes before you can get it poured!)

As for how much resin you need, we have a resin calculator that does that math for you. You can use it for free here: https://www.resinobsession.com/resin-calculator/

I realize there is a lot of information here and you will likely have more questions. I’m here to help. 🙂
