We are doing a steampunk wedding and want to spell out the bride and groom’s names in bicycle chain. Our idea is to do this on a piece of wood and then pour some type of resin over the chain to bond it to the wood. We don’t want to necessarily make a tabletop with the bicycle chain encased in resin, but just to get the chain to stay in place for the afternoon while hung on a wall. Is this do-able?

If we had to make a dam around the letters, what material could be used to make the dam that would not adhere to the resin?

Resin won’t stick to masking tape, packing tape or wax. Have you considered using a two-part, quick curing epoxy to bond the chain to the wood? Something from a hardware store could work in this case and you wouldn’t need to dam it up.
