3 ways to grow a resin business

Ready to grow a business selling your epoxy crafts? Woo hoo! I’m excited for your side hustle soon-to-be full-fledged business selling your resin art. And guess what? You can do this, even if you’re a resin beginner. Here are my 3 best tips to help you grow your resin business pronto.

accounting

Notice I said grow, not start your resin business.

There is a bit of semantics to that statement.

Because starting your resin business is the monotonous, mundane, mind-numbing part.  That’s where you’ll need to

*Choose a business structure (sole proprietorship, LLC, etc.)
*Set up bank accounts and organize accounting (numbers are never creative)
*Secure permits and licenses (sales tax, occupation, etc.)

These are areas where you’ll need to consult an expert. They’ll ensure you’re following the laws and guidelines set forth by your city, state, and country.

Once you’ve got these under control, let’s get to the sometimes fun, sometimes challenging, but always necessary ideas for growing your resin business.

Here are my 3 best tips to grow your resin business

resin art

1. Understand how your customers are using your art.

You need to create gorgeous, high-quality resin crafts every time. You won’t have a resin business long if your work disappoints your customers.

People put resin in the sun, leave it in a hot car, or run items through the dishwasher. (and that can just be the first day after getting it home from the craft festival)

Take some of your resin mistakes and ‘abuse’ them.

Get them wet.
Expose them to heat.
See how easy it is to scratch them.

With this information, you can build a better product or make it clear to customers what they can and can’t do with their purchase.

social media

2. Leverage social media.

Get your work out there. Showcase your creations, share your process, and let people get to know the artist behind the art. Platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, Tik Tok and Facebook are great places to start.

But which one should you start with?

(Because you’ll drive yourself crazy to manage all of them.)

Ask your customers which platform they frequent most. Send a survey or ask when you’re selling your work at craft fairs. Make them choose one, and go all in. Learn everything you can about how to be the best on that platform.

At a minimum, you need to post regularly and interact with people. (That’s the point of social!)

3. Develop a style.

Consistency is key. Even when inspiration is playing hard to get, keep creating. You’ll develop a style and technique over time.

This style is what will attract (or push) people away from you. You can’t be everything to all people.

Finish this sentence:

I want to be known for making the most amazing __________.

The more specific your answer, the better potential customers you’ll attract.

Where should you sell your resin creations?

Don’t build a business on ‘rented’ land.

Sure, there are third-party platforms like Etsy, eBay, Amazon Handmade, Shopify, and Facebook Marketplace. But speaking from experience, you’ll have the most success creating a stand-alone store to sell your resin art and crafts. Third-party platforms change constantly, plus it’s hard to stand out in a sea of artists. (much less resin)

So what about craft shows?

These are great provided you’ve got the right expectations. Sure you want to sell, but there are other things you can do to like

*Market research
*Test new products
*Unload old items
*Get people on a contact list
*Connect with people in the most social way possible 🙂
